Avon motorcycle tyres for classic motorcycles
For 1960s bikes and earlier, a good choice is the zig-zag treaded GP range, or the wider R2, in the rear and traditional longitudinally treaded Roadrunner F2 at the front. For slightly newer classic machines, the AM18, AM22, AM23 and AM26 Roadriders are a sound choice offering good grip and water dispersal. A sportier arrangement is an Avon Speedmaster on the front wheel with a block-treaded Avon Safety Mileage on the back, to provide both grip and traction. These tyres can also be fitted onto modern bikes but in our experience are best suited to classics.
Avon motorcycle tyres for off-roaders
Several Avon tyres have good off-road capabilities but the Trailrider and Trekrider ranges are especially suited. Both tyres have similar tread patterns, but the Trekrider’s grooves are wider and deeper making it particularly suitable for off-road riding. For larger motorbikes, especially Supermoto machines, Avon make the Distanzia range.
Avon motorcycle tyres for premium performance
Protyre have several Avon motorcycle tyres for sale, all capable of matching the best offerings from bigger brands such as Pirelli, Bridgestone and Continental.
Snakes roll over the ground with phenomenal speed and grip. In developing the Cobra, Avon emulated their scales to produce tyres with these qualities. The Cobra is a superb all-round tyre that is fitted as OEM on many Triumph motorcycles. The Cobra Chrome variant is a premium tyre that takes the design further.
Dense steel belts under the crown ensure rigid control and durability, while flexibility at the shoulders provides 5% more road contact than comparable tyres. They also use nylon and super strong aramid plies, these are great shock absorbers and have a reputation for comfort as well as performance. The Cobra is also popular on Harley Davidsons and there are extra wide versions for power cruisers and trike bikes such as the Honda Goldwing.
These are similar tyres, but also known for their low noise, long life and great cornering. They too have extra strong filaments, perfect for heavier or well-laden bikes and come in all sizes including extra-wide.
Avon Spirit and Storm
The Spirit is an evolution of the Storm range and is now Avon’s premium summer sports touring tyre. It has a less “twitchy” reputation than the Pirelli Pilot and is usually cheaper than the Metzeler Roadtec. 3D sipes provide rapid warmup and interlocking teeth guarantee braking stability. The Spirit is designed for roads but rugged enough for the track. The new versions offer up to 20% higher mileage. The latest Storm 3D X-M is the ideal sports-tourer tyre.
The track-focused 3D Ultra Xtreme Slick and 3D Ultra Extreme Rain Racer combine all-weather performance and admirable longevity. The 3D Ultra Evo is optimised for hypersports and street racing.
